Stand up for Truth

John 10:10 states, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”
This is another scripture that is often misinterpreted. Many of us have described the “thief” as being the devil. However, if we examine the text closely, we find that Jesus is referring to the “thief” as being those who claim to have spiritual authority.
To get a fuller understanding of the “thief,” we must look at the previous chapter where Jesus heals a blind man. After which, the healed blind man is kicked out of community because of his relationship with Jesus. At this point, Jesus stands up for this man.
Whether we realize it or not, there are people within our midst that also need a touch from the Master’s hand. This man was once blind but now he could see. He was lost but now he was found. In so many ways, we too are born blind. However, with just one touch from the Master’s hand, we too can be made to see.
Yet, the “thief” will try everything and anything to prevent us from seeing the truth. That is why Jesus said, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” The Pharisees tried to prevent this man from sharing the truth with others. The “thief” will try to do the same with us. Stand up for the Truth because in the end the Truth will stand up for you.
Lord, grant us the strength to stand up for Truth. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
